Jeffrey Liu
CEO/CCO
Jeffrey Liu started on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 2003 trading Eurodollar Options. After becoming a lead market maker at his company, he co-founded his own proprietary market making firm Cardinal Trading.
Following three profitable years, Jeffrey joined Optiver to help launch their Eurodollar Desk and bridge their fixed income operation in 2015. From 2015-2019, Mr. Liu became the longest tenured Eurodollar Trader at Optiver helping grow the desk to a top three market maker in the product. Seeking new challenges, he left in 2019 to launch Patronus Capital.
Mr. Liu is originally from Missouri and currently resides in Chicago. He has a Bachelors in Science from the University of Missouri Columbia with a dual major in Financing and Banking.
Bernie Yu
CIO
Bernie Yu began his career in 2012 at Optiver APAC extensively trading Hong Kong Single Stock Options along with multiple Asian Equity Index options.
In 2014, he was asked to trade JGB Options which led to his transfer in 2015 to Optiver US to help price and trade US Treasury Options. He was promoted to head of STIR in March of 2016 leading the desk to an all-time high in profitability at the time. Bernie then transitioned to lead the cross-product trading strategy in 2018 in US Rates Options until his departure to join Patronus in April of 2020.
Bernie Yu is originally from Brisbane, Australia and lives in the Chicago area. He earned a Bachelors in Commerce majoring in Actuarial Science and Financial Econometrics from the University of New South Wales in Sydney. He also holds a Certificate of Quantitative Finance from the CQF Institute.
David Matsumura
Quantitative Developer
David Matsumura started in the equity research department of Credit Suisse in 2007. His main priority was working on the HOLT Model Development Team and consulting buy-side clients. Another focus of David's was contributing to research on fundamental, ESG and alternative data projects. He also led technical projects in security mastering and data science during his tenure.
After 10 years at Credit Suisse and achieving Vice President of the Model Development Team, Mr. Matsumura joined Kabouter Management LLC, a $5B Equity Fund as a Quantitative Analyst. There he built the systematic strategy research platform and later launched the firm's first systematic equity strategy. Completing 4 years at Kabouter, he sought a new challenge and joined Patronus Capital in January 2023.
David is originally from Salt Lake City and currently resides in Chicago. He earned his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University in Provo. David is also a board member of Chicago Autism Network, a non-profit established by his wife.
Patronus was founded on the idea that within today’s competitive trading markets, there is a substantial opportunity gap between the success of High Frequency Market Making Firms (HFMMF) and the passive asset manager approach.
